A New Journal for a Defining Moment: Launching Sustainable Science and Innovation

It is with great pride and a deep sense of responsibility that we introduce the inaugural issue of Sustainable Science and Innovation (SSI). We launch this journal at a moment when the world can no longer treat sustainability as an aspiration for the future—it has become the central scientific and technological challenge of our time.

SSI is founded on a simple but demanding conviction: that rigorous science and real-world impact belong together. Too often, transformative discoveries remain confined to the laboratory, while the urgent problems of climate, energy, and resources await solutions. This journal exists to close that gap—to publish research that is both intellectually excellent and meaningfully directed toward a more sustainable world.

Our title reflects a deliberate duality. The first pillar, Sustainable Science, welcomes foundational, cross-disciplinary research in green science, clean energy, sustainable materials, the circular economy, and low-carbon technologies. The second pillar, Innovation, is devoted to translation: the engineering, scale-up, and application that carry a promising result from the bench to society—toward a cleaner environment, environmental remediation, green agriculture, and waste treatment. We believe these two pillars are not separate tracks but a single continuum, and SSI is designed to honour both.

Published by UK Scientific Publishing Limited, supported by the Singapore National Academy of Science (SNAS) and Singapore National Institute of Chemistry (SNIC), SSI is rooted in a region that stands as a vibrant hub for sustainability research, yet our outlook remains unequivocally global. As a fully open-access journal, every article we publish is freely available to researchers, educators, policymakers, and innovators worldwide—because knowledge that can help repair the planet should never sit behind a paywall.

To our contributors, we make two promises. First, we will uphold the highest standards of peer review; scientific rigour is non-negotiable. Second, we will respect the urgency of your work with an efficient, transparent editorial process, ensuring that important findings reach the community without needless delay.

This first issue is only a beginning. A journal is ultimately defined not by its founders but by the community that gathers around it. We therefore extend an open invitation to scientists, engineers, and thinkers at every career stage—and especially to the next generation working at the intersection of science and sustainability—to make SSI their scientific home.
